Keaton Downing picks up his Dad’s Passion for Racing
Like a lot of young drivers, Keaton Downing grew up around racing. His dad, Chris, used to race Pro Stocks at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City. It was not long before Downing found himself behind the wheel of a car.
When asked what led him to want to race, Downing simply responded, “My dad.”
He also credits his dad with having the biggest influence on his racing career. His dad also keeps the car running and ready to race. In fact, he even built the car’s engine.
Downing’s fondest memories of racing are the beginnings of his own racing career.
“I remember racing Go-Karts at TK Raceway with my brother,” he recalled.
It was also at that same track where Downing made his first trip to Victory Lane.
“It was a long time ago at TK Raceway when I was six-years old,” he laughed as he recalled that first victory. “I felt like nothing could stop me.”
Downing later ventured into and found great success in the 4-Cylinder Warrior divisions at both Paducah International Raceway and Western Kentucky Speedway in Nebo. In 2008, he pulled double-duty to win 4-Cylinder Track Championships at both tracks. During that amazing season he also finished second in the state and fourth in the nation.
While Downing has been racing primarily at PIR, he shared that he does plan on traveling more. “Nebo, Flora, Camden, or Clayhill,” he spoke of prospective tracks in his future.
Western Kentucky Speedway will always be a special place for Downing because his grandparents live in Nebo, and they always come out to the track to show their support. His mom, dad, and brother, Tyler can also be found at WKS and PIR showing their support for their favorite driver.
Within five years Downing would like to be racing either Late Models or Modifieds.
When asked about 10-years down the road, he laughed, “I want to be racing somewhere.”
For the 2010 season at PIR, Downing had 11 Top-10 Street Stock Feature finishes with eight of those in the Top-Five, and three Heat wins.
Downing currently drives the #57 Street Stock sponsored by HDM World, Jesse Treas Cabinetry, Chubby Chassis, Harris Racing Engines, and Snake Signs.
A Gilbertsville, Kentucky native, Downing is a student at Marshall County High School. While racing takes up a great deal of his time, he still finds time to enjoy his favorite hobbies like riding four-wheelers, hunting, and fishing
Keaton Downing’s dad may have gotten him interested in racing, but it is his own passion for it that keeps him focused on it. Come to Paducah International Raceway on Friday nights and see Keaton Downing chase his dreams on the track.
